SD1004 - Sustainable Development Goals: Challenges & OpportunitiesDr Craig SmeatonBuilding on the introduction and broad overview of Sustainable Development (SD) provided in SD1000, SD1004 offers detailed investigation of a selection of core issues in SD and of how these issues are addressed by key players.Module Link
GG1001 - Climate, Capital, Community: Fundamentals of Global GeographyMr William McVeanThis module shows how Geography, a discipline that draws on the social and natural sciences and the humanities, is uniquely placed to understand our changing world. Its combination of lectures, tutorials, hands-on learning, and transferable skills training is core to Geography programmes, but designed to be relevant and accessible to students from all areas of the University.Module Link
GG1002 - Worlds of Crisis and HopeDr Richard Streeter, Dr Ian Lawson, Mr William McVeanThis module unpacks the complexity of these challenges by analyzing different manifestations of 'a world in crisis' as questions of geography - shaped by geographic processes operating at a range of scales (from the global to the local). Throughout the module we focus on how approaching these issues through a geographic lens can provide hope for more sustainable futures.Module Link
GG2013 - Geography (I): Space, Time and Changing LandscapesDr TJ Young, Dr Tom Cowton, Mr William McVeanThe module presents the concepts of space and time as foundations for our understanding of the world, and explores a range of changing landscapes – physical, cultural and theoretical. Through these, students will be introduced to a range of sub-disciplinary fields and contemporary topics, laying the foundation for specialisation at honours. Module Link
GG2014 Geography (II) - Nature, Culture and PowerMr William McVeanThis module continues to introduce key sub-disciplinary fields in the wide-ranging discipline of Geography, while highlighting the different ways that we think of nature, culture, power, and their entanglements in contemporary social and environmental issues.Module Link
SD2005 - From Sustainable Development to Human SecurityDr Fernando Benitez-PaezThis module builds on the core material of SD1000 and SD1004 of SD Year 1. SD Year 2 explores sustainable development and human security (semester 1) and sustainability and nature (semester 2).Module Link
SD2100 - Sustainable ScotlandMr William McVean, Dr Charlotte van der Lijn, Dr TJ YoungSustainable Scotland draws on Scotland's unique landscapes, patterns of urbanisation, and the geography of population to examine interrelated issues of land use and social inequalities to the broader questions of sustainability here in Scotland.Module Link
GG3209 - Spatial Analysis with GISDr Urška Demšar, Dr Fernando Benitez-PaezThis unit will introduce students to the basic principles of spatial analysis.Module Link
GG3210 - Remote SensingDr TJ YoungThis module focusses on using satellite remote sensing data and techniques to quantify and study characteristics and changes at the Earth surface.Module Link
GG3212 - Data Analysis for Physical GeographyDr Ian LawsonThis module provides training in a suite of data analysis methods used in physical and environmental geography. Module Link
GG4245 - Biogeography of the Earth SystemDr Ian LawsonThis module explores the discipline of biogeography, which aims to describe and explain the distribution of different life forms (species, communities) across the Earth. Module Page
GG4251 - Volcanic ash: dispersal, impacts and applicationsDr Richard StreeterThis module provides an introduction to tephra in both its role as an agent of change, and as a marker of change. Module Link
GG4255 - Geographies of Urban HousingDr Charlotte van der LijnThis module has two main aims: to develop substantive knowledge and theory about urban housing with an emphasis on European policies at different scales; and to look more closely at the links between housing and planning (in its widest sense) to develop data handling and visualisation skills.Module Link
GG4257 - Urban Analytics: A Toolkit for Sustainable Urban DevelopmentDr Fernando Benitez-PaezThis module explores the intersection of urban analytics and sustainable development, focusing on using Python to analyse and visualise urban data. Module Link
GG4259 - GlaciologyDr Doug BennIn this module, students will gain an in-depth introduction to modern glaciology, and learn how glaciers interact with climate, how they move, how they store and release water, and how they affect sea level. Module Link
GG4328 - Spatial Analysis for Social and Environmental ResearchDr Urška DemšarStudents will learn how to use advanced GIScience methods for applications in human and environmental geography, including spatial statistics methods, methods for analysis of movement and/or other contemporary developments in GIScience.Module Link
GG4398 - Single Honours Research Dissertation in GeographyEveryoneThe research dissertation is the fundamental piece of independent research work upon which the Geography degree is based. It provides students with the opportunity to design and undertake an independent, original piece of empirical research under the supervision of a member of staff. Module Link
SD4124 - Sustainable Catchment Managment Dr Craig SmeatonThis modules offers a holistic science-based approach to co-manage coastal environments. Introducing the science underpinning contemporary environmental issues at the land-ocean interface allows for the exploration of the multiple issues in the practice of sustainable catchment management at a local and international scale.
Module LInk
SD4128 - Coordinating a Humanitarian Disaster ResponseDr TJ YoungThis module will explore how a humanitarian response is coordinated in practice, and how effective assessment and analysis of humanitarian data underlies most if not all decision-making in a coordinated humanitarian response. Module Link
SD4130 -
Communication and Visualization for Sustainable Development
Dr Tania MendoThis module will explore the science behind effective communication through data visualization and the theories underpinning effective science communication and public engagement activities.Module Link

GG1002- A World in CrisisDr Charlotte van der LijnThis module unpacks the complexity of these challenges by analyzing different manifestations of 'a world in crisis' as questions of geography - shaped by geographic processes operating at a range of scales (from the global to the local). Module Link
SD1004 - Sustainable Development Goals: Challenges & OpportunitiesDr Fernando Benitez-PaezSD1004 offers a detailed investigation of a selection of core issues in SD and of how these issues are addressed by key players. Utilising the UN's Sustainable Development Goals as a framework, the module is organised around five thematic clusters.Module Link
GG2011 Geographies of Global ChangeDr Charlotte van der Lijn, Dr Fernando Benitez-PaezThinking 'geographically'; about the physical and human dimensions of global change in the areas of human inequality, paleoecology, biogeography and population geography offers particular insights into the dynamic processes and interactions shaping our changing world. Module Link
GG4201- Advanced Debates in GeographyDr Charlotte van der Lijn, Dr Urška DemšarThis module extends and provides a summation of work undertaken in the geography Honours programme, providing students with an opportunity to reflect on the scope and diversity of geography as a discipline and to think holistically about their own learning. Module Link
GG4252 - Ice and ClimateDr Tom CowtonThis module will begin by looking at the evidence for past glaciation and its influence on landscape development and modern land use. It will then look at what these past glacial periods can tell us about the threat to present day glaciers and ice sheets, including the likely rate and magnitude of deglaciation, the key mechanisms and feedbacks controlling these changes, and the critical interactions between the Earth's ice, oceans and climate.Module Link
GG4304 – Advanced Topics in Physical GeographyDr Richard StreeterThis module introduces students to advanced data analysis approaches in Physical and Environmental Geography, such as time-series analysis, multivariate analysis and modelling. These topics are explored using a variety of statistical programming languages (R and Matlab).Module Link
