Geographically weighted models and tools: the ‘GWmodel’ R package and ‘GWmodelS’ standalone software and Envisioning Digital Twins for Instrumented Farms of the Future

Dr. Binbin Lu – Abstract: With the recent increase in studies that focus on characterising spatial non-stationarity for processes that vary across space, Geographically Weighted (GW) models have become the ‘de facto’ statistical toolkit for this purpose. This has attracted a wide range of users and developers from many science domains. In this talk, I will introduce some newly developed GW models and demonstrate these through case studies in land carry capacity and others. For widespread research usage of GW models, I will introduce the R package, ‘GWmodel’ together with a newly developed standalone GW software, ‘GWmodelS’ that is underpinned by GWmodel. The standalone software provides significant advantages in terms of a user- friendly graphical interface, operational efficiency, and accessibility – all of which is expected to promote usage across a wide range of user technical knowhow.

Professor Paul Harris – Abstract: Paul’s presentation will describe the methodological progress in the creation of demonstrator farm Digital Shadows/Twins informed by the open and globally unique datasets of the instrumented research farms at Rothamsted Research’s campus at North Wyke in Devon UK. Conveniently, the same experimental site has a rich history of agroecosystem model application and development, including process and data driven hybrids. This dual aspect enables the research farms to be ideally suited to their Digital Shadow/Twin development for eventual transference of developed concepts and digital structures to real, on-farm Digital Twins.

Bios:

Dr Binbin Lu holds a PhD in Geocomputation from the National Center for Geocomputation, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Ireland. He is the main developer and maintainer of the GWmodel R package, which incorporates an abundance of localised techniques, including GW regression, GW principal component analysis, and more.

Prof Paul has been the project lead for the North Wyke Farm Platform, National Bioscience Research Infrastructure, since 2017. To date, over 80 million data points have been openly released for four research farms, including those from over 400 in situ environmental sensors.
