Challenges in automating ecological surveys with AI
Abstract:
Ecological surveys play an important role in conservation and policy-making. Such surveys have traditionally involved a lot of manual work, which is increasingly being automated using machine learning, computer vision and AI tools. However, the type of data involved in this work is often different to the large datasets used to train vision and AI models, which leads to problems when deploying automated solutions. In this talk, I will go over some of the common pitfalls and show some research on this topic from the School of Computer Science.

Dr Kasim Terzic is a researcher in Artificial Intelligence with a focus on applying AI to a wide range of real-world problems. He obtained a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Hamburg before spending several years as a postdoctoral researcher in Portugal and London. He currently leads the Computer Vision group at the University of St Andrews. He developed the School’s Machine Learning course and served as Director of Postgraduate Teaching for Computer Science. Over the years, he has worked on numerous EU and UKRI-funded research projects on applications of AI. His recent work focuses on applications of AI methods in ecology and conservation.
